Poetry and Short story competition: SAVE AS writers group competition on the theme of a Dickens Character
Note from Anne Pilcher: There is a Short Story competition this year to be run by the Sittingbourne Rotary Club.
This is a Sheppey wide event to mark the bicentenary of Dickens’ birth and events will be organised with a loosely related Dickens flavour.
We will be doing some readings at the event in September and invite all to take part. A site will be set up shortly for more information; in the meantime the idea put forward is that we do some readings in the style of Charles Dickens using our own material but reading to the public from a lectern as he did.
Poetry Competition – Canterbury Festival – closing date 31st May 2012
Click on the link above to see the details, this is a worthwhile project and is open to all aspiring poets. Good luck if you have a go!
Next meeting on 8th May at 7pm – call Valerie Tyler 01795 410794 for more information.
Remembering Bill Anthony
Discussion of involvement in up-coming events.
Exercise for the May meeting will be:
1) a poem about a current news event – take about twenty minutes on the evening – 50 lines maximum.
2) a story – you are at a protest meeting (outside Parliament) about pensions and you meet an old flame – write from the point of view of the male or female – again about twenty minutes on the evening.
(I have put a story on the site to set the mood – I promise I will write another on the night! – James) Protest
Events run by us or by other groups will be posted here with links added.
A reminder of the Green Arrow Publishing call for contributions to Scriptor 9
For information about this bi-annual book for new writing email: firstname.lastname@example.org
John had been running Scriptor for many years and is a well known poet and writer as well as an excellent creative writing teacher. He has a connection with Sheppey and the Swale area and has read with the Sheppey and Sittingbourne Writer’s Group. Scriptor is a good vehicle for new writing and for this issue chosen contributors have an opportunity to compare their work with other good writing.
Give it a go.
